When it comes to cleaning your car mats, knowing what type you’re working with is key. There are two main types of car mats thatyou’ll come across: rubber and carpet. Each needs a slightly different approach, but with the right method, you’ll have them looking as good as new in no time.

Rubber mats are the easy-going option. A quick rinse, a scrub, and you’re done. Carpet mats, on the other hand, demand a bit more attentionbut the results are worth it.

Step 1: Remove and shake
Take the mats out of the car and give them a good shake to get rid of loose dirt and debris.

Step 2: Rinse
Grab a garden hose or a bucket of water and give them a solid rinse.

Step 3: Scrub up
Using a stiff brush and some car mat cleaner (or a mild degreasing soap), give them a good scrub, especially in those grooves and corners.

Step 4: Final rinse
Rinse off all the soap and dirt thoroughly.

Step 5: Dry off
Leave the mats to air-dry fully, ideally in the sun, before popping them back in the car.

Step 1: Remove and shake
Start the same way: take them out and shake off loose debris.

Step 2: Vacuum
Use a handheld or car vacuum to pick up dust, hair and crumbs.

Step 3: Tackle the stains
Apply a carpet cleaner or upholstery shampoo, let it soak in, then scrub gently with a soft brush.

Step 4: Rinse or steam
Rinse with clean water or use a wet/dry vacuum or steam cleaner to lift out any leftover dirt and cleaner.

Step 5: Air dry
Make sure they’recompletely dry before reinstallingnobody wants a musty car interior!
